Check

Check occurs when a player's king is directly attacked by an opponent's piece.The player must respond immediately by capturing the attacker, blocking the check, or moving the king to safety.

Escaping Check: The 3 Rules


  1. Move the King – You can move your king to a square that is not under attack

A knight delivering check. White King needs to move to the square that is not under attack

  1. Capture the Attacking Piece – You can capture the piece that is putting your king in check


Black King can capture the White Bishop

  1. Block the Check – You can place a piece between your king and the attacking piece to block the threat (works only against bishops, rooks, and queens). You can not block a knight or a pawn.


Black King can not run away or capture the White Queen. But it can block the check with Bishop, knight or Queen
