The Pawn moves forward one square, or two on its first move, and captures diagonally.
The Queen can move in any direction up, down, sideways, or diagonally
The Bishop moves diagonally across the board. It can travel as many squares as it wants, as long as the path is clear.
The Knight moves in an “L” shape—two squares in one direction and one to the side
The King is the most important piece in chess. The goal of the game is to protect your king.
The Rook moves in straight lines—up, down, and side to side—as far as the board allows, as long as the path is clear.
"Check" means the king is in danger!
Stalemate means you can’t move - and your king is not in danger.
Castling is a special move where the king and rook team up.
Checkmate means the king is trapped! And there’s no way to escape
Each piece has a number - pawns are 1, queens are 9.
A special pawn rule - capture it as it passes by.
Your king helps corner the enemy king, and the rook delivers mate.
Rooks push the king to the edge and deliver checkmate
Bishops and king force the enemy king to a corner and deliver mate.
The enemy king is pushed to the edge, where the queen delivers checkmate.
